I See You...But What Do I See...
"Everything is not what it seems, but only what you think it is".
When we see someone, what do we see? A smooth complexion, tall and pretty....mostly physical descriptions. So, how do we see a person... actually see her, as a whole person - attitude, character and temperament?
What we see is actually our personal perception - based on our understanding of the world and our surroundings. We will then associate certain characteristics and make comparisons based on the knowledge that we have. How accurate is this judgment? Hence, how can we attempt to make sense of a situation or justify anything if these are based on personal perception. Perceptions may be affected by many factors including personal history, emotions and knowledge. It also depends on the boundaries we have built in our lives such as the level of tolerance or patience.
When the Tsunami hit the city of Aceh in 2006, many attempted to find reasons why this catastrophe took place there. Being a city of deep devotion for Islamic faith, one can only feel that such a location do not 'deserve' God's wrath. On the other hand, who are we as mere human beings to make judgments who should or should not be tried by God. We can only see what's on the surface and this may totally be deceiving or even bias. Then, when a major Earthquake hit the cities of Japan, who would have guessed that a country which is so technologically advanced and infra-structurally ready, would be hit so hard that the world was put on standstill watching it crumbled as it struggled to pick up the pieces.
I'm in no position to make judgments and neither should anyone.. pertaining these or any other situations for that matter. We shouldn't be finding faults in anything or any one by just looking on the surface, and asking "why" or "how come" while attempting to justify them our way. God knows best. We need to learn to accept. What we see may be a 'live' form of learning and it is up to us to draw out any valuable lessons to enrich ourselves. Learning is the key. When we learn, we understand and then, God Willing, we'll be able to put ourselves in proper perspectives and will be able to see things in a better light. With this also comes empathy. When we're in 'balanced' mode, we're able to 'function' better and be conscientious and effective. When we're effective, we become better people, who are able to serve and be at our best.
So.. sometimes what you see, is not what you get...with this I mean, we have to really see beneath the surface and see a situation wholeheartedly to understand. This world needs positivity to uplift the human spirits currently drowned by the catastrophes and anarchy; not superficial judgments and critiques.... this world is, borrowing a quote from a famous movie, "More than meets the eye"...
