WHITE BREAD.... Simple Goodness!
I've forgotten to get a loaf of bread for today's breakfast, so made one out from scratch. It's simple and it requires only 6 ingredients (you may add on more if you're feeling adventurous). It's even quicker if you have a bread-maker! Try it and enjoy that comforting aroma of fresh bread in the morning. It's lovely :)
I substituted cooking oil for olive oil. It gives the bread a slight off-white colour and a nice subtle aroma. I've also added 2 tablespoons of powdered milk for added richness. If you wish to have it soft, you may add 1 tablespoon of vegetable shortening. You can even substitute castor sugar with brown sugar and your bread will turn out slightly off-white, and it'll be delicious!
Simple Bread
1 cup warm water
3 tablespoons castor sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
3 tablespoons of cooking oil (I used extra virgin olive oil instead)
2 tablespoons of powdered milk (optional)
3 cups of high protein flour / bread flour
2 1/4 teaspoons of dried yeast.
** If you're using a breadmaker, you may place ingredients in the order recommended by manufacturer.
Method 1 with dough-hook mixer
- Place flour in a bowl and sprinkle yeast, sugar and salt. Mix well.
- Make a well in the center and pour the the liquids in.
- With a dough hook, mix till dough doesn't stick to the sides.
- Remove dough and place in an oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and proof in a warm place till it rises double the size, about 1-1 1/2 hours.
- Remove dough on to a floured board, knock dough and knead briefly.
Method 2 Keading by hand
- Place in a greased loaf pan (1 1/2 liter) and let rise again for about 1/2 hr. Preheat oven to 175 deg celcius.
- Brush some milk on it and bake in oven for about 30mins.
- Remove bread and it's ready when it gives a hollow sound when you knock.
Let bread cool on wire rack for at least 20mins before slicing it.
Enjoy!!

- In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam.
- Mix salt and oil into the yeast. Mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
