Count Your Blessings

If God afflicts you misfortune, none can remove it but He; and if He bestows on you a favour, none can withhold His bounty. He is bountiful to whom He will. He is the forgiving One, the Merciful" [Yunus 10:107]

Let's count our blessings..beginning this very moment. Let's not see what we lack but what we have at hand. There's so much wealth, beauty and love that surrounds us which, we sometimes ignore. And we would often fill ourselves with regret when they are taken away.

A close friend faced a misfortune recently. Being a promising writer and an icon to young readers in Malaysia, she lost her precious writing materials as her laptop was stolen when her car was smashed. How devastating... Nevertheless, she's left unharmed, Praise to God, even though it has left her truly badly shaken. I hope and pray God restores her confidence and strength so she's able to write again real soon for her young fans. Life goes on....

This serves as a big reminder to me. Misfortunes like this can happen to anyone, God forbids. This, however, is not a venue for judgmental views as no one has the right to say 'why it has happened' or 'what could/should have been done'. In human eyes, no one deserves any form of misfortune. But who are we to say 'No'. You'll need strength to rise from the fall of misfortunes. And this strength comes from realization and humility. As humans, we err and become neglectful, and these may be a 'wake-up call' to put things in perspectives.

For this, I always try to remind myself to never take anything for granted. Everything given to us is 'borrowed' and can be taken back anytime. When we are bestowed grace (nikmat), we have to find a way to 'give back'. How? It's up to us, what's within our capacity. Gratitude, together with humility, are 2 principles which I hope to hold on to, God willing, and hope to teach my young ones.

At the end of it all, there's always...always something to be grateful for..
